BEST4: Discovering ways to find and prevent heartburn-related health problems
BEST4 is running two trials to discover ways to find heartburn-related health problems and prevent oesophageal cancer.
The BEST4 Screening Trial is offering 40,000 people with heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux the capsule sponge test. This is to see if the test can help find heartburn-related problems, such as Barrett’s Oesophagus, earlier and improve long-term health. If the test reduces the side-effects and deaths from oesophageal cancer it could be used as part of a National Screening Programme.

The BEST4 Surveillance Trial is for people who already have a diagnosis of Barrett’s Oesophagus aiming to see if the capsule sponge test can be used for monitoring of any signs of dysplasia (cell changes prior to cancer) or cancer. If the test works, it could be used in Barrett’s surveillance to reduce the number of endoscopies needed.
