EMS Healthcare will be providing the mobile units and nurses for the capsule sponge appointments as part of the BEST4 Screening Trial.
You can take your normal medication prior to the appointment, however if you take blood-thinning medication, please check the stopping instructions.
Yes the capsule sponge tests manufacturer name is Endosign. There is also a very similar device in the UK called the Cytosponge.
Negative result – the capsule sponge test showed no signs of cell changes. No further tests are needed.
Insufficient result - capsule sponge test did not give a clear result. This is nothing to worry about, but we are inviting you to have a repeat test.
Positive result – there are some changes in the cells collected. We recommend that you have an endoscopy to confirm the cause of these cell changes. This is nothing to be worried about but it is good to check the changes. In many cases, these health problems do not need further follow-up. After your endoscopy you will be given advice on any further tests or treatment needed.

Yes. Please do not have anything to eat or drink for at least 4 hours before the procedure. If you need to take medication, please only take this with small sips of water.
Yes you can. Please provide this information to the nurse on the day of your appointment. If you would like to discuss this beforehand, please call our study team on 0808 281 4772.

The nurses will ask you medical and heartburn health related questions such as; the medication you are taking for your symptoms, medical history, etc.

Yes. The mobile unit is wheelchair friendly. Please contact the trial team on 0808 281 4772 prior to you appointment.
Yes. The mobile unit will be located with close-by toilet facilities.
This is not a problem. Please call the team on 0808 281 4772 after you have booked your appointment and we can arrange for a translator telephone service to assist you throughout your appointment.
Due to the size of the facilities and friend or family member can only join you during your appointment when a witness is required to be present during the informed consent process. A witness is typically required for participants who can understand the study and give their consent verbally, but not able to sign the consent form, for example:
